Information for Key Workers 2021
Following the First Minister’s announcement on Tuesday 19 January 2021, schools will remain closed until at least mid February except to children of key workers and those we feel would benefit from attending school or early learning and childcare setting.
The Scottish Government have informed us that the number of children taking up these places should be kept to the absolute minimum necessary. The safest place for your child during this period of time is at home.
Parents and carers who are key workers, as outlined below, can apply for their child to attend schools or early learning and childcare settings using the process outlined below.
Children must only attend school or early learning and childcare settings on the days where there is no alternative childcare available. If a key worker parent is on a day off, the child should be at home. If you are able to work from home, the child should be at home.
Please note that pupils in the senior phase, S4-S6, are not eligible.
If you are applying because of difficulties with remote learning at home, please contact your child’s school or early learning and childcare setting to discuss these in the first instance.
If you have not yet applied but require essential childcare, you should work through the flowchart to ascertain whether you and your partner (where applicable) are classified as key workers and whether your child would be entitled to attend their school or early learning and childcare setting. If all alternative options for childcare have been explored and exhausted you can complete and submit an application form. Please provide all the information requested. Incomplete forms will not be processed and you will be asked to provide further information. This will delay the application process. You must allow 3 working days for your application to be processed.
The delivery of service may change should the Scottish Government make any further announcements.
All decisions around whether your family is entitled are final and families are asked to use the Council's complaints procedure if they are unhappy with a decision.
Key Worker Categories
- Category 1 – Health and Care workers directly supporting COVID response, and associated staff; Health and Care workers supporting life threatening emergency work, as well as critical primary and community care provision; Energy suppliers (small numbers identified as top priority already); staff providing childcare/learning for other category 1 staff.
- Category 2 – All other Health and Care workers, and wider public sector workers providing emergency/critical welfare services (for example: fire, police, prisons, social workers), as well as those supporting our Critical National Infrastructure, without whom serious damage to the welfare of the people of Scotland could be caused.
- Category 3 – All workers (private, public or third sector) without whom there could be a significant impact on Scotland (but where the response to COVID-19, or the ability to perform essential tasks to keep the country running, would not be severely compromised).
