Report your Discoveries

We welcome all reports of sites and objects, as it helps us to build a fuller picture of Shetland’s past, even if you have already handed in your find to Shetland Museum and Archives. A photo attached to an email is always welcome too. 

Please include as much as possible of the following: 

  • Name of finder (if not you) 
  • Your name (including first and last name) 
  • Your email address 
  • Your phone number 
  • Description of the site /object(s) found: What made you think it was a site? How does it survive, (banks, stones, walls etc)?  Size (height and area)? What do you think it is?  
  • For objects -How you found the site: such as out walking, metal-detecting, field walking, chance, house clearance or other means 
  • Description of the location: please indicate if near any existing building or ruin, is it in heather, grasslands, peatlands, eroding banks at coast, etc  
  • Grid Reference: if possible, please provide a Grid Reference of 2 letters followed by 8 digits. One way to obtain this is to download a free app GPS OS to your phone. For help to find it using a paper map see How to find a National Grid Reference 
  • Nearest place and general location (eg: approx.100 metres north of Bridge of Walls, at the shore) 
  • Digital photos of the site/find and wider shots of the general location.  
  • Do you give permission to link the photos which you submit to the database, which may in due course appear online and would you wish to be named? 
  • If you would like to create a more detailed record, or if you are a history group, you might like to use the Shetland Archaeology Site Recording form
