What We Do

The SIC’s Archaeology Services are a cornerstone of responsible planning, heritage conservation, place-making and economic development. Backed by robust legislation, the service ensures Shetland’s rich history is protected for future generations while supporting sustainable growth, community benefit and contributing to ‘Our Ambition’ ‘to create a positive, confident and sustainable future’. 

We locate, evaluate, protect and explain archaeological sites throughout Shetland. 

We review all relevant planning applications and advise when archaeological work or mitigation is/ might be required. 

We are also very happy to offer free bespoke advice before you submit an application to the planning service 

We offer guidance on woodlands, peatlands
