Community Led Housing is about local people taking a leading role in addressing housing needs within their own communities. It supports the development of affordable, sustainable housing solutions that reflect local priorities and help communities remain vibrant, resilient and attractive places to live.
Shetland Islands Council recognises that access to suitable housing is one of the key challenges facing many communities across Shetland. Community Led Housing can help overcome barriers that may not be addressed through mainstream housing provision alone, particularly in remote and rural areas. It supports local organisations to explore opportunities, develop projects and bring forward housing that meets identified local need.
The Council works alongside a range of partners, including community organisations, Hjaltland Housing Association, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Shetland Community Benefit Fund, to provide coordinated advice and support throughout the housing development process. This includes support from the earliest stages of an idea through feasibility, project development, construction and long-term management.
As part of this approach, the Council has established a pilot Community Led Housing Scheme to help eligible community organisations access funding where there is a gap between available external funding and the total cost of delivering housing projects.
