Picnic and Play roadshow

We will champion prevention and early intervention, taking the leadership for health improvement by tackling the social determinants of health: supporting local sustainable development, building the economy and developing jobs, tackling inequalities, developing the knowledge and skills of local people, ensuring affordable and appropriate housing, accessing leisure opportunities and helping people to feel safe and well.

Early in 2022, members of the Education and Families Committee suggested extending the council’s popular ‘Picnic and Play’ sessions from Lerwick into rural areas and so, that summer, the sessions went on their first ever roadshow.

All six sessions (Brae, Sandwick, Yell, Aith, Whalsay and Unst) were really well attended (around 780 people took part) with lots of positive feedback from families saying how much they enjoyed it and that it was a great social outing.  Only one of the events had to be moved inside due to the weather.

People were encouraged to come along with their picnics and enjoy a variety of games and activities for all ages.  Various organisations got involved including the Play Van, Shetland Library, Shetland Recreational Trust, Ability Shetland and RSPB.
