Shetland residents can now apply for a bus pass online, with Shetland now included among the list of local authorities accepting online applications for the National Entitlement Card (NEC).

Anyone over 60 or meeting the disability criteria is entitled to free bus travel with a valid NEC – widely known as a bus pass.  The card can be used for local bus travel in Shetland and anywhere in Scotland, although travel is currently subject to Covid-19 restrictions.

Young people aged 16-18, or full time volunteers aged 19-25, are entitled to discounted bus and rail travel with a Young Scot Card, which is also part of the NEC scheme.

Shetland residents with a valid NEC or Young Scot Card will receive four Northlink ferry vouchers valid for travel April to March each year, entitling the holder to a bunk a cabin on eligible ferry journeys.

The online application process will require a device with a camera or a webcam, such as a laptop, tablet or phone.   Paper applications are still accepted.
