Due to deteriorating weather conditions, the main A968 road through Unst will close to all through traffic at 5pm today.
Strong winds are causing significant drifting snow, making driving conditions extremely difficult, particularly around the highest point at Caldback Hill. Council staff will soon cease any snow clearing and gritting operations, except to support any ‘blue light’ emergencies where needed.
Road closure signs will soon be in place between the Westing junction, north of Uyeasound; and the south side of Baltsound, a distance of approximately four miles.
The Bluemull Sound ferry will also be tying up at Gutcher Ferry terminal from 5pm today for the rest of the night. Latest updates on Bluemull Sound ferry operations can be heard on the Voicebank at 01595 743971.
The road closure will be reviewed tomorrow morning, although strong winds are forecast to continue.
