The hands of the clock faces at Lerwick Town Hall will stay at 12 noon for the time being, after the mechanism was damaged in recent cold weather.
During northerly gales and sub-zero temperatures earlier this week, the hands of the north clock face became stuck. It is thought that a build-up of snow and ice stopped the hands from turning. A pin in the clock mechanism has broken, which stopped the clock hands on all four faces from any movement and also protected the mechanism from any further damage.
Town Hall staff have sourced replacement parts which will be installed as soon as possible. In the meantime, the hands of all the clock faces have been moved to 12 noon, although the chimes will continue to operate every quarter hour.
