ZetTrans, the Regional Transport Partnership for Shetland, is seeking views on future investment options for the Whalsay inter-island transport link.
Following the previous Shetland Inter-Island Transport Study, the next step is for an Outline Business Case to develop the case for investment in transport links to Whalsay. This would aim to offer solutions to the current problems on the Whalsay route, which include the age of the current vessels and vehicle capacity, particularly at peak times; issues related to the ferry routes; and the sailing frequency.
Ryan Thomson, Chair of ZetTrans, and Shetland Island Council’s Environment and Transport Committee, said: “The Outline Business Case sets out a proposed phased approach to tackle the immediate constraints on the ferry service, whilst keeping the long term options flexible as we continue to work on the case for investment in our inter-island transport infrastructure. I would encourage communities to take part in the online engagement which will support the case for delivering improved connections to and from Whalsay.”
The business case would establish a preferred technical option and outlines how that option could be funded, procured, managed and delivered.
The online engagement, with supporting information a link to the survey, can be found on the ZetTrans website
The deadline for responses is 12 noon on Monday 14th February 2022.
