Athlete Travel Award Scheme reopens

Island travel scheme 2021

The Athlete Travel Award Scheme reopens today for the first round of applications for 2022/23.

This year’s scheme will continue the flexible approach taken last year, with two rounds of applications due to the uncertainty caused by COVID-19.  Feedback from sports and athletes highlighted that opening two rounds is fairer to more sports and more athletes, with some unaware of their yearly schedule as early as April.

Applications for Round One in 2022/23 open today and will close on Wednesday 9th March.  Round Two applications will open in September for programmes beginning from October 2022.  Up to £750 will be awarded per athlete based on their training and competition schedule and this will be the same for the second round later in the year. Successful and unsuccessful athletes in Round One will be able to reapply in Round Two.

Jack Clubb, Sports Development Officer, Shetland Islands Council said:  “It has been amazing to see the success of Shetland athletes off island in recent months despite the challenges faced during the pandemic. We are delighted to be reopening the scheme for the 2022/23 period, and we expect there to be a large number of applications.  The change to two rounds of applications was a success last year and we are happy to announce it will continue.”

Stewart Harris, Chief Executive, sportscotland, said: “This has been an incredibly challenging period for Scottish sport but athletes and coaches have shown real resilience and commitment in finding ways to continue their training during the pandemic.  We recognise the specific challenges faced by island athletes, especially at this time, so it’s important to be flexible in how we provide support for the Athlete Travel Award Scheme.”
