Down ‘The Salt Roads’ at Shetland Library

The salt roads cover john goodlad

Shetland Library is hosting a talk and signing by author John Goodlad for his new book.

The Salt Roads, published by Birlinn, explores how our fishing industry affected our history and culture.  He looks far beyond Shetland to trace his story – ‘from the wild waters of the North Atlantic, the ice-filled fjords of Greenland and the remote islands of Faroe to the dining tables of London’s middle classes, the bacalao restaurants of Spain and the Jewish shtetls of Eastern Europe’.

John has previously worked in the fishing and fish farming industries, and his previous book The Cod Hunters was shortlisted for Best Maritime Book of 2020 by the Maritime Foundation.

John said, “I am delighted to be speaking at the Library about my new book, telling the tale of Shetland’s long standing connections with Europe through stories of interesting people.  I hope my book will appeal to a wide range of readers. Although it is a book about fishing, it is also very much for people who think they are not interested in fishing.”

The event takes place at Shetland Library on Thursday 8th September and John will give his talk at 7pm.  Books will be available for sale from 6.30 pm, and also after the talk.  John will be happy to answer questions and sign copies of his book.

John Goodlad will also speak at Uyeasound Hall on 22nd September as part of the Wordplay festival.
