Cullivoe Primary School in Yell has been shortlisted in the first-ever national Scottish School Food Awards.

The inaugural awards hope to “celebrate and improve standards of well-being, sustainability and school meals across the country”.  Cullivoe Primary School has been shortlisted in the category of “Sustainable School of the Year” alongside George Watson’s College, Edinburgh; and St. Leonards School, St. Andrews.

Cullivoe Primary School’s nomination recognises how the school uses the food produced in its garden and polytunnel for snacks and dinners.  The school cook and the local community are all involved, helping pupils on the island to learn sustainability skills.

The national awards aim “to showcase and enhance the influence that healthier lifestyles can have on pupil productivity” and are open to independent and local authority institutions, as well as early learning centres, contract caterers and food suppliers.

The awards will be judged by 14 experts from across different sectors and the winners announced on the evening of Thursday 27th October, at a celebration at Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh.

Claire Lawson, Head Teacher at Cullivoe School said: “We are all proud of our school and I am so delighted that the work of the pupils, parents and staff is being recognised in this way.  As an Eco school and a Gold Level Rights Respecting School, we continue to support our pupils to become responsible local and global citizens.”
