Shetland Library is this week celebrating the joy of sharing stories and books with a series of Book Week Scotland events.

Book Week Scotland is an annual celebration of books and reading across the country, now in its eleventh year, running this year from 14-19 November 2022.  This year’s theme of Scotland’s Stories includes author talks, a comedy performance and a free giveaway book.

At the Library on Wednesday night this week from 7-8pm, author and military historian Jon Sandison relates soldier’s stories of the First and Second World Wars, and tells the story of the unveiling of the Lerwick War Memorial.  He will be signing his book That Grim Red Dawn.

Jon Sandison says: “It will be an honour doing this. I feel it is so important that the stories of some these men and their generation can be shared, and that they are not forgotten.”

On Friday evening from 7-8 pm author Tom Morton launches his latest book Holy Waters: Searching for the Sacred in a Glass  The evening will feature readings from the book, music, poetry, tales too tall to publish and may also feature one or two holy and unholy drams.

On Saturday, from 7-8 pm, Shetland comedy group The Imposters will bring their comedy improvisation to the library, with an evening of fun centred on books and libraries.

The events are free but the Friday and Saturday events require tickets which are available through Eventbrite or by contacting Shetland Library.

Anyone unable to attend any of the events is welcome to visit the library and pick up a free copy of Scotland’s Stories - this year’s free giveaway collection of stories written by the people of Scotland.

Marghie West, Adult Services Librarian: “The library is delighted to be holding these events and to share our love of story and reading.  We encourage everyone to come along.  If you can’t make it to the events, please stop by the Library and get a member card to so you can stock up on reading material.  Your library card allows you to borrow eBooks, eAudiobook and eMagazines so you can visit the library online as well as in person.”
