Those schools in Shetland which opened today will close earlier than normal with a forecast of significant amounts of snow for Shetland over the next six hours.

The Council’s Roads Service has a forecast which indicates more than 10cm of snow may fall this afternoon which is likely to disrupt road travel across Shetland.  Drivers are being asked to consider whether they need to travel.

Parents are asked to get in touch with schools, if they have not already been contacted, to hear of local arrangements for school transport or collection of their children.

Heavy snow has already begun to fall in the North Isles and North Mainland, where schools have been closed today.  Council gritters are out across Shetland to clear snow and gritter crews will continue to clear roads until 5pm today.

Bus services remain under review this afternoon – latest updates are on the Council’s Public Bus Service Voicebank on 01595 745744.
