Operational Note: Belmont ferry terminal works this weekend

Passengers travelling to and from Unst, Yell and Fetlar this weekend are reminded that major works will take place to replace the linkspan at Belmont ferry terminal in Unst from Friday evening.

There will be no vehicle services to and from Unst while the works are underway, from 1905hrs on Friday evening (26th) until 0600hrs on Monday morning (29th).  During this time, ferry services will operate to and from Uyeasound Pier in Unst, and will be for foot passengers only. 

On Friday evening, the last vehicle ferry from Belmont will be at 1830hrs to Gutcher (Yell) and the last vehicle ferry to Belmont will be at 1855hrs from Gutcher, then on to Hamars Ness (Fetlar).

Access to the ferry for foot passengers on MV Bigga at Uyeasound will be by gangway and on the Ro-ro ramp at Gutcher and Hamars Ness.  Any passengers who may require assistance are asked to make themselves known to the crew.     

Ferry services to and from Unst and Fetlar this weekend will operate on a bookings only basis - the Ferry Booking office number is 01595 745804.  The alternative timetable in place for Bluemull Sound ferry services is available on the Council’s website.

Vehicle services on Bluemull Sound between Hamars Ness and Gutcher will continue to operate, to the alternative timetable above. 

Shetland Islands Council would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by these essential works.

Bus services will run to the normal timetables on Saturday 27th May but will operate to and from Uyeasound pier to connect with ferry services across Bluemull Sound as follows: 

Southbound bus services

  • Service 28 (Unst Service) – 0735 from Baltasound for ferry departure from Uyeasound at 0810 then connecting to Bus Service 24V (the North Isles Integrated Service) at Gutcher, heading through Yell and the Shetland Mainland to Lerwick.
  • Service 28 (Unst Service) – 0955 from Baltasound for ferry departure from Uyeasound at 1030 and connecting to Bus Service 24Y (Yell Service) at Gutcher, arriving at Ulsta at 1120 for the 1130 sailing to Toft.  Bus Service 23 (Toft to Lerwick Service) connects to this ferry at 1200, heading to Lerwick via Brae.

Northbound bus services

  • Service 24V – 1410 from the Viking Bus Station (1355 from Tesco) will link to the Yell Sound ferry sailing from Toft at 1500 and subsequently the (foot passenger only) 1550 ferry from Gutcher to Uyeasound (Unst Bus Service 28 connecting at the ferry) and on to Hamars Ness (Fetlar Dial-a-Ride Bus Service 29 connecting at the ferry).
  • Service 23 – 1710 from the Viking Bus Station will link to the Yell Sound ferry sailing from Toft at 1805, Bus Service 24Y departing Ulsta at 1820 and the (foot passenger only) 1855 ferry from Gutcher to Uyeasound (Unst Dial-a-Ride Bus Service 28 connecting at the ferry) and on to Hamars Ness (Fetlar Dial-a-Ride Bus Service 29 connecting at the ferry).

RG Jamieson & Son will operate bookable trips to/from Uyeasound Pier to meet the amended ferry timetable on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday.  All journeys must be booked 2 hours before the ferry departure/arrival in Uyeasound by calling 07747 847017.

Fetlar Dial-a-Ride Bus Service 29 will connect to all sailings to/from Hamars Ness on Saturday.  These are bookable by calling ZetTrans on 01595 745745 by 1600 on Friday.
