A special event will be held on Saturday 24th June aimed at celebrating women in political power, and supporting women in Shetland to get involved in political life at all levels.
‘Scotland’s Women GatHER’ is being run by the Scottish Parliament, in partnership with the organisation Elect Her. The core event will be held at the Scottish Parliament in Holyrood, and livestreamed to regional hubs across the country to allow participants to listen to inspirational speakers describe their own journey, and take part in free workshops and activities.
The intention is to support and encourage women who might be thinking about how to make a change in their local community, join a political party, or put themselves forward for election.
The Shetland hub at the Town Hall will be facilitated by the SIC’s Chief Executive Maggie Sandison, while Council Leader Emma Macdonald will attend at Holyrood. Emma says: “I’ve been involved in politics now since 2017 and I’m so glad I took the decision to stand for election to the Council. I started out thinking it maybe wasn’t for me, but it has been an extremely rewarding experience.
“There are so many opportunities for women to get involved in politics – at every level, from community councils right up to our MSP, women have an enormous amount to offer, and the intention is to share that information and experience in a safe and inclusive space. I can’t recommend it enough – it’s an event that could change your life.”
Shetland’s Women GatHER is being held at Lerwick Town Hall from 10.00 a.m – 3.00 p.m. on Saturday 24th June. It’s free to women of any (or no) political affiliation, background or age.
