Statement: Meeting with Secretary of State for Scotland

Councillor Emma Macdonald

Representatives of Shetland Islands Council today met with The Rt Hon Alister Jack MP, Secretary of State for Scotland in the UK Government, to discuss topics of importance to the islands.

Attending the meeting were Councillor Emma Macdonald, Council Leader; Councillor Moraig Lyall, Chair of the Council’s Environment and Transport Committee; and Maggie Sandison, Chief Executive.

Commenting after the meeting, Emma Macdonald said: “Today’s meeting with the Secretary of State was a positive opportunity to explore our shared commitment to reducing the cost of living and improving connectivity in Shetland – specifically, short tunnels, the ‘Shetland tariff’ and universal broadband.   We discussed our proposed funding mechanisms and we’re delighted to receive the commitment for cross government work on these proposals.”
