Many schools closed today – Monday 15th January 2024 

Snow disruption 8

Due to the overnight snowfall in many areas of Shetland and the forecast of more snow today, many schools and ELC settings will be CLOSED to pupils today.   

Temperatures across Shetland have been at or below freezing and there are strong northerly winds over the isles, with further snow showers expected. Road conditions are hazardous in many areas, affecting school transport. 

The majority of schools are CLOSED to pupils today – this includes Anderson High School, Brae High School, Aith Junior High School, Mid Yell Junior High School, Sandwick Junior High School and Whalsay School. 

All other schools not listed above are also closed to pupils today – EXCEPT Baltasound Junior High School, and Burravoe, Cullivoe and Fair Isle and Foula Primary Schools which are OPEN. 

All ELC settings - including Peerie Foxes, Burra Pre-school, Hame fae Hame and Lerwick ELC will be CLOSED. Islesburgh Out of School Club is also closed.  

The Met Office has a current Yellow Warning of Snow and Ice for Shetland in place until Tuesday and then a further warning of Snow until Thursday.
