Local transport disruption as wind picks up

South mainland bus service 6

Strong winds are this morning causing disruption on local bus and ferry services as the tail of Storm Isha passes over the isles this morning.

Winds have picked up and strong gales are forecast to last until mid-morning, expected to gust 60mph or higher.

All schools and early learning and child care settings are OPEN this morning but some local bus operators have cancelled some school bus transport services.  Latest information is also available on the School Transport Voicebank on 01595 745743.

School buses CANCELLED this morning are:

  • J&DS Halcrow - services to Whiteness Primary, and Anderson High School
  • K&K Transport - service to Tingwall Primary and Whiteness Primary, feeder to AHS transport
  • R Robertson & Son - services to Anderson High School, Brae High School and Mid Yell Junior High School
  • Wastbus, Whites Coaches, A&K Transport and Johnston's Services - services to Aith Junior High School

Services operated by JA&GD Nicolson, Andrew's and Johnson Transport, together with services operated by companies with smaller vehicles WILL operate although delays may be experienced due to the conditions.

In locations where school transport has been cancelled this morning, parents and carers can decide whether it is safe for their children to travel to their school or early years setting, if an alternative means of transport is available.   Parents and carers must also arrange afternoon transport in case conditions also prevent buses operating later in the day.

  • Service 6 & 6A (Lerwick to Sumburgh)
  • Service 9 (Lerwick to Walls)

Ferry services are also disrupted this morning, with the Bluemull Sound, Whalsay, Bressay routes suspended due to current winds.  A single vessel is operating on Yell Sound but suspension is also possible on this route.   Passengers are urged to check the Voicebanks for the latest information before travelling - www.shetland.gov.uk/ferrystatus
