Catering staff at Sound Primary School in Lerwick have won an award at this year’s national Assist FM conference, celebrating the public-sector facilities management industry in Scotland.

Earlier this week, Head Cook Alison Beattie, Assistant Cook Brenda Moar and Relief Cook Kris Farmer were presented with their ‘Community Focus Award’ by Helen Budge, Director of Children’s Services.   In December 2023, the catering team volunteered their time to cook 115 meals on Christmas Day, delivered to households in Lerwick and Scalloway to families and individuals who might not otherwise have been able to enjoy a full Christmas dinner.

Also shortlisted at this year’s Assist FM Awards was Duncan Leask, Head Janitor at Aith Junior High School, who was a finalist in two categories, ‘Sustainability’ and ‘Outstanding contribution to FM Services’.  For the last 10 years, Duncan has led the school’s growing projects and he runs the school gardening club, sharing his skills and knowledge with pupils and growing tasty produce that is shared between the school and the community.

The Assist FM conference took place in Glasgow on 16-17 May 2024, attended by local authority delegates from across Scotland, representing the facilities management sector, including catering, cleaning and janitorial services.

Helen Budge said:  “I’m delighted that the dedication of some of our Children’s Services staff has been recognised through these national awards.  Congratulations to Alison, Brenda and Kris for this award, recognising their support for the community at Christmas time.  Well done also to Duncan for his longstanding commitment to help some of our green-fingered young folk into gardening in Aith.”
