Following receipt yesterday of the statutory notice of resignation from Councillor Tom Morton, a by-election date has been earmarked to fill the vacancy in the Shetland North Ward.
Taking account of the statutory rules for local government by-elections, Returning Officer Jan Riise has identified the most suitable date for this by-election as Thursday 23rd January 2025.
A formal notice calling for nominations will be made in the coming weeks, and if the vacancy is contested, a by-election would be held on this date. The by-election count would take place the following morning on Friday 24th January.
Councillor Morton’s notice of resignation is effective from midnight on Thursday 31st October 2024.
