Teams from Shetland Islands Council’s Environment & Estate Operations Service are finalists at a national public sector awards event, to be announced next week.

The Association for Public Sector Excellence (APSE) will host their annual Performance Network Awards on Thursday 5th December, with the four Council teams represented among local authority finalists from across the UK.

Shetland Islands Council is listed in the following categories -

Environmental Health - Best performer
Refuse collection - Most improved performer
Transport operations & vehicle maintenance - Best performer
Building maintenance - Most improved performer

Several other local authorities are listed in these categories, including other Councils in Scotland, as well as Metropolitan Borough Councils, and County and District Councils elsewhere in the UK.

The teams who are finalists this year deliver maintenance services to Shetland schools and public buildings; carry out environmental health inspections; support and manage the Council’s vehicle fleet; and collect and manage waste, cleansing and refuse services across Shetland.

APSE is a membership association that maintains and develops a network of local authority contacts and services across the UK, promoting excellence in the delivery of frontline public services.  Over 300 local authorities and organisations share information, expertise and provide support to each other.

APSE also provides a local government benchmarking service, helping to improve public service provision by sharing performance indicators.  Shetland Islands Council submits annual returns to APSE for a range of key service outputs, such as vehicle inspection numbers, MOT failure rate, bins missed on collection days, and many others.

Performance indicators are compared against other local authority areas to help drive improvements, learning from successful practice in other areas.

Carl Symons, Executive Manager – Environment and Estate Operations, said: “I’m delighted that the hard work of our staff to deliver public services in Shetland been recognised, as finalists across four categories at this year’s APSE Performance Network Awards.”
