Signs are being put up and road surfaces marked for the introduction of the new 20 miles per hour zones in areas of Lerwick.
A reduced speed limit for vehicles of 20 miles per hour is being introduced on residential and local access roads in Lerwick, to improve road safety for all road users. Road users and residents will see the work currently underway to place signs and mark roads.
This work will continue for a number of weeks and new signs will initially be covered until the necessary Traffic Regulation Orders are put in place for the reduced speed limit zones.
The Scottish Government has committed to work with local authorities to reduce the speed limits in towns, cities and villages to 20 miles per hour where appropriate. The proposals for streets in Lerwick were published in late 2024 and no objections were received. A similar consultation for streets in Scalloway also received no objections and 20 miles per hour zones will also be implemented there soon.
Proposals to introduce 20 miles per hour limits on other residential streets and roads across Shetland will be progressed throughout 2025.
More detail on the implementation of 20mph speed limits in Scotland is listed on the Transport Scotland website (PDF)
