Building refurbishments have taken place at Voxter Outdoor Centre, thanks to the Community Payback Team which has carried out unpaid work at the centre over the last three years.

The team's efforts at Voxter House included internal and external repairs, including painting bedrooms and bunk beds, repairing a ceiling, and repairing damaged walls as well as a variety of other interior maintenance.  Outside the building, the team has also repaired fencing and gates, giving an overall time commitment of 498 hours.

Voxter Outdoor Centre near Brae is run by volunteers of the Voxter Centre Trust, a registered-charity which looks after the building and its surrounding land as a valuable community asset.

Theresa Moreland, of the Trust said: “Without the assistance of the Community Payback team, there would have been no way to afford such extensive repairs and updates.  Their hard work and dedication has made a huge difference to the overall appearance and condition of Voxter House.  We simply couldn’t have done this without their help”

Julie Halcrow, Community Payback Officer with Shetland Islands Council said:  “This successful partnership between the Community Payback team and Voxter Outdoor Centre highlights the positive impact of Unpaid Work.  By offering support to charities, and other organisations and individuals, those involved in paying back to communities gain a valuable experience and see a benefit to the local community.”

  • Community Payback Orders (CPOs) are court-imposed sentences in Scotland designed to enable individuals to make reparation to their community, often through unpaid work, and are intended to reduce re-offending through rehabilitation and punishment.  There’s more details on the Scottish Government website
