Local youth advocacy group, Shetland Youth Voice, won an award at the National Youth Work Awards in Glasgow last night.

The event, hosted by YouthLink Scotland, saw youth work teams from across Scotland attend the event, celebrating the impact of youth work.   Among the nominees twelve award categories, Shetland Youth Voice picked up the award in the  ‘Participation & Youth Voice’ category for their work making sure that young people across the isles have a role in local decision-making.   The group has brought national partners to a transport summit, influenced the Council’s Corporate Plan, and tackled a range of topics to help shape the future of their communities.

Other finalists in the same category were Future Change, a youth-led social action movement changing life from the inside out at HMPYOI Polmont; and Routes, a youth support and participation project for 12-to-26-year-olds affected by alcohol and drug use in their families.   This category was sponsored by Planet Youth Scotland, an Edinburgh-based charity, focused on improving young people’s health, wellbeing, and relationships.

The work of Shetland Youth Voice has been supported by the Council’s Youth and Employability Service.

Councillor Davie Sandison, Chair of the Council’s Education and Families Committee said:  “This is brilliant news and I had really hoped they would do well.  The revival of Shetland Youth Voice has been exemplary and they’ve been well supported too.  My congratulations to everyone involved.”
