Most Shetland schools to reopen tomorrow, Wed 7th January

Most schools open wed 07 january 2026

After two days of closures at the start of the new term due to wintry conditions, most schools in Shetland will reopen tomorrow – Wednesday 7th January.

Most schools expect to be open tomorrow, with some individual arrangements in place, including possible later openings.  Schools will contact parents and carers directly with details of any local arrangements.

Schools definitely CLOSED tomorrow are:

  • Baltasound, Mid Yell, and Sandwick Junior High Schools
  • and Burravoe, Cunningsburgh, Dunrossness, Foula, Nesting and North Roe Primary Schools.

Depending on local conditions tomorrow morning, there may be others too – this will be communicated by school staff to parents and carers.    All arrangements are subject to change depending on overnight weather conditions.

It is likely that overnight temperatures will be close to freezing again and ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces, such as footpaths and pavements.   Pedestrians and drivers are asked to take care on footpaths and roads tomorrow morning.  Parents and carers are responsible at all times for deciding whether to send their children to school, if it is open for pupils.

It is unlikely that all school transport will be running as normal, and parents and carers are asked to check the School Transport Voicebank tomorrow morning for any updates on 01595 745743.

Islesburgh Community Centre and Café will be open, and the Council’s drop-in youth HUB at 66/68 Commercial Road will also be open.   However, Youth Clubs will be closed tomorrow.

The Eric Gray@Seafield centre will be open tomorrow – families will be contacted with details of any changes to transport arrangements.

The Met Office currently has a Yellow Warning of Snow and Ice for Shetland, until 2359hrs this evening.
