Operational Note – Household waste and recycling collections

Essy kert dec 2021

Council staff will do extra runs this weekend (Sat 10th & Sun 11th) to try and collect recent missed collections of black bags, and carboard and paper recycling collections.

It is hoped to collect in the North and South Mainland this weekend, including in Whalsay and Unst.  Collections in Yell are underway today.

Missed collections of carboard and paper in Scalloway will be picked up tomorrow (Thursday 8th).  Black bags will also be collected in East Voe tomorrow (Thursday) too.

Collection dates for Bressay (normally Wednesdays) and also some parts of the Westside (normally collected on Tuesday) are still to be rescheduled - apologies to householders in these areas.

Collections in Nesting and Vidlin of carboard and paper, and black bags, will be collected on Friday (9th).

Temperatures will remain close to freezing for the next few days and some side roads may take time to clear.  Council staff will collect from properties and communal bins as normal, as long as vehicles and staff have safe access.

There are some communal bins of waste in Lerwick that are needing collected soon and staff will attempt to clear these today, if not already collected.

Thanks to householders for their patience during the recent spell of cold weather, which overlapped with the calendar for the Festive period.

Householders are reminded make sure their bins are placed out for collection by 7.30am. Householders can also report any missed collections on the Council’s website

Recycling collection calendars can be found on the Council’s website – at www.shetland.gov.uk/recycling-rubbish/

The Gremista Waste Management Facility in Lerwick is also open as normal to deposit any household waste or recyclable items.
