Safer Internet Day 2026

Safer Internet Day 2026

Tomorrow is Safer Internet Day 2026, supported locally by Shetland Public Protection Committee, and which this year highlights the safe and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence, or ‘Ai’.

This year’s theme  “Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of Ai” recognises that many children and young people are hearing about and using AI online.  Parents and carers are being encouraged to support them with the skills and confidence to make safe choices when using smart technology.

Shetland Public Protection Committee (SPPC) organises events throughout the year, including internet safety sessions, youth conferences in Shetland schools, and Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) training.

This year, the committee has also developed an Ai debating tool, shared with local primary schools, to stimulate discussion among young people around the pros and cons of Ai.

Lindsay Tulloch, Chair of SPPC, says:

“This Safer Internet Day 2026, we encourage young people and communities to use the internet and Ai safely, responsibly, and with respect for others.  Digital spaces should be places where everyone feels confident to learn, create, and connect without fear of harm.

“Staying safe online and using Ai responsibly are important skills for young people and communities today.  The internet and new technologies can be powerful tools for learning, creativity, and connection but only when they are used thoughtfully and with care.

“We encourage everyone to protect their privacy, think critically about what they see and share online, and use Ai in ways that are fair, respectful, and honest.  By supporting each other, building digital skills, and speaking up about harmful behaviour, communities can help create online spaces that are safe, inclusive, and empowering for all.”

Educational resources for Safer Internet Day 2026 are available for parents, carers, young people and professionals working with children and young people of different ages at the UK Safer Internet Centre saferinternet.org.uk/
