Storage and charging of e-bikes banned on Council premises

Shetland Islands Council has introduced a ban on the indoor storage and charging of electrically powered bikes and scooters on its premises

The precautionary measure follows national concerns about serious fires linked to lithium-ion batteries in some e-bikes and e-scooters.  Fires involving these batteries can escalate rapidly and present significant risks in occupied buildings.

The ban applies to indoor storage at all buildings owned, managed or occupied by the Council, including schools and community facilities.

There are currently no suitable facilities at Council premises designed to safely store and charge these devices.  Where a need is identified, the Council will explore options for providing appropriate external storage and charging infrastructure in line with fire safety requirements.

This decision relates specifically to the fire risks associated with bikes with lithium-ion batteries being stored or charged inside buildings.

E-bikes may still be stored outdoors on Council property, provided they are kept at least 10 metres away from buildings, waste areas, smoking areas, combustible goods and other valuable assets.

The Council remains committed to promoting active travel and continues to encourage walking and cycling as healthy and sustainable ways to travel.

Carl Symons, Executive Manager – Environment and Estate Operations, said: “The safety of our residents, pupils, staff and visitors is our absolute priority.  While incidents are relatively rare, lithium-ion battery fires can develop quickly and are difficult to extinguish.

“Considering national fire safety concerns, we have taken the precautionary step of prohibiting indoor storage and charging of e-bikes and e-scooters across our premises.”
