The Council's Roads Service is aware this morning of an oil spill on the A968 road between Toft and Voe, (the ‘Dales Lees’ road) and asks drivers to take particular care on this route.
The oil spill appears to have affected the road surface on many sections along its length - a distance of approximately eight miles. The origin of the oil spill is unknown but the road surface is slippery and hazardous in many places.
Council staff have placed warning signs at various points along the road and deposited sand across the road surface at bends and at junctions.
With low cloud and reduced visibility across many parts of Shetland today too, road users are asked to make sure they use dipped main beam headlights and rear fog lights wherever necessary.
