Cullivoe Primary School has been recognised with the Sustainability Award at the recent Assist FM Awards, the national awards for facilities management in Scottish local authorities.

The Sustainability Award is sponsored by Müller Milk and “rewards and promotes environmental best practices across the public sector in the UK” recognising how organisations not only contributed to their organisation but also to their surrounding community.

Cullivoe Primary School was recognised for embedding sustainability at the heart of everyday school life.  Pupils take a lead in monitoring energy use, reducing waste and driving Eco Schools activity, making sure that environmental awareness is part of the school’s culture.

The school has developed strong circular economy practices, with food waste carefully measured, reduced and composted.  Home grown produce is then used in school meals and shared with the local community, reinforcing sustainable habits beyond the classroom.

Community involvement has been central to the school’s success.  Families support growing, watering and harvesting produce, helping to build practical sustainability skills across the wider community.

The Assist FM awards were presented at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Glasgow on Thursday 14th May 2026, attended by representatives from across Scotland’s 32 Councils.  Glasgow City Council was also shortlisted in the same Sustainability Award category.

Cullivoe Primary School is situated in the village of Cullivoe in the island of Yell, in the north of Shetland, and has a current school roll of eight pupils.

Claire Lawson, Head Teacher at Cullivoe Primary School said:  “We are absolutely delighted to receive this national award.  Our pupils have taken real ownership of sustainability in our school, from growing food and reducing waste to making more environmentally friendly choices every day.  This award reflects not only their enthusiasm and commitment, but also the support of families and the wider community, who play a vital role in everything we do.  We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved.”
