People across Shetland are being encouraged to consider standing for election as a councillor ahead of the local government elections in May 2027.
In May 2027, voters across Shetland will elect their next councillors. To help people find out more about the role, Shetland Islands Council has launched its "Who stands for the Council? It's people like you" campaign, encouraging residents from all walks of life to consider becoming a candidate.
The campaign also encourages people to think about friends, relatives, neighbours, colleagues or other members of their community who they believe could make a positive contribution as a councillor.
Councillors play a vital role in shaping services and making decisions that affect communities across Shetland. They represent local residents, help set the Council's strategic direction, and work with partners to improve outcomes for people across the islands.
As part of the campaign, a new handbook has been published, providing practical information about what councillors do, who can stand for election, the support available to elected members, and how to become a candidate.
The campaign will also feature a series of video interviews with current councillors sharing their experiences of the role, alongside opportunities for anyone interested in standing for election to find out more.
Drop-in information events will be held later this year and in early 2027, giving prospective candidates the chance to ask questions and learn more about what is involved.
Catherine Hughson, Depute Convener says: “Local government works best when elected members bring a wide range of experiences, skills and perspectives to the Council chamber. We want people from all walks of life to consider whether they could help shape the future of Shetland by standing for election. You don't need to be a political expert to become a councillor. If you care about your community and want to make a difference, we would encourage you to find out more."
