The draft Shetland Active Travel Strategy 2020-2025 has now been launched for consultation, seeking the public’s views on walking, cycling and wheeling, including wheelchair use, across the islands.

The document reflects feedback from a number of community events held earlier this year, and over 400 responses to an online survey, which also provided an insight into changed travel behaviours as a result of the pandemic.

‘Places for Everyone’ funding was secured from Sustrans Scotland, to develop the Shetland Active Travel Strategy 2020-25, which has been led by ZetTrans in partnership with Shetland Islands Council, NHS Shetland, NatureScot, Shetland Recreational Trust and Visit Scotland.

Once finalised and approved the strategy will guide development of facilities to encourage more active travel in Shetland, to help to reduce Shetland's carbon footprint and respond to the Climate Emergency.

The consultation can be accessed at www.zettrans.org.uk/about/consultations

If you require a paper copy or wish to make your response verbally please contact Robina Barton on robina.barton@shetland.gov.uk or 01595 745802.  The deadline for responses to the consultation is Friday 11th December 2020.

Ryan Thomson, Chair of ZetTrans and Chair of the Council’s Environment and Transport Committee, said: “ZetTrans and its partners want walking, cycling and wheeling to be a natural choice for people making local everyday journeys in Shetland, wherever possible.  We’re really grateful to all those who attended events earlier in the year, or responded to the online survey, which have helped to shape this draft plan.  I’d urge anyone who has a view on active travel to give us their thoughts on this strategy.”
