Drones and UAV

Due to the potential hazards posed by unregulated drone use, Ports and Harbours advises against using these area as a convenient ‘corridors’ or ‘spaces’ for drone flying.

Commercial Operators

Commercial Operators intending to make use of a drone should provid 7 days notice to the Harbour authority.

The following information will be provided;

  • Proposed time and duration of filming
  • Proposed location (to include a diagram showing flight area and take-off and landing site for the drone)
  • Risk assessment and method statement
  • Insurance including public liability
  • Details of proposed drone operating company – ie CAA licences / certificates; - type / size / weight of UAV

Non Commercial Drone Use

It is understood that there are no licensing requirements for drones under 250g however Shetland Islands Council Still advises against flying in harbour areas.

Recreational users must make themselves familiar with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Requirements and follow the Drone Code;

  • Maintain line of sight with drone
  • Stay below 120m (400ft)
  • Keep 50m from any person, vessel, pier or other structure.
  • Keep 150m from crowds or built up areas
