Winter Payments
Winter Payments 2025/26
Shetland Islands Council has approved two Winter Payments for all families who have an approved Clothing Grant or Free School Meals (FSM) award for the 2025/26 academic year. These payments are provided as part of the Island Cost Crisis Funding and are designed to help households with increased winter living costs.
Who Will Receive Winter Payments?
Winter Payments will be made automatically to:
- Families with an approved Clothing Grant for 2025/26
- Families with an approved Free School Meals award for 2025/26
There is no need to reapply. Payments will be issued directly into your nominated bank account.
If you think you may be eligible for a Clothing Grant or Free School Meals but have not yet applied, full eligibility criteria and the application form can be found on the Shetland Islands Council website under: EMA, Bursaries and Financial Support – Shetland Islands Council.
Payment Schedule
First Winter Payment
- Amount: £120 per child
- Paid on: Friday 12 December 2025
- You need to have an approved CG/FSM Application by Friday 5 December 2025 to qualify for this payment.
Second Winter Payment
- Amount: TBC
- Payment date: Friday 27 March 2026
- You need to have an approved CG/FSM Application by Friday 13 March 2026 to qualify for this payment.
Payment is made per child, not per household.
Do I Need to Apply?
No. If you already have a Clothing Grant or Free School Meals award in place for the 2025/26 school year, you will automatically receive both Winter Payments.
If you have not yet applied for support but believe you may be eligible:
