Make sure you know where your stop cock is

The stop cock is the tap that turns off your water supply so it is a good idea to make sure everyone who lives with you is aware of its location. Burst pipes can happen at any time and when water is pouring into your home you need to act quickly.

If you get burst pipes:

• Turn off the water at the stopcock and open all taps to drain the system. 
• Any open fires should be put out and the immersion water heater should be switched off, if you have a solid fuel boiler let the fire die out.
• If any water comes into contact with the electrical fittings or wiring, switch off electricity at the mains immediately. 
• Catch leaks in a basin and soak up water with towels to prevent water damaging your home.

If you get frozen pipes:

• Turn off the water at the stopcock and open all taps to drain the system. 
• Any open fires should be put out and the immersion water heater should be switched off, if you have a solid fuel boiler let the fire die out.

If you are going to be away from home during the winter months:

• You should make sure your heating still comes on at regular intervals on a low temperature.
