Community Alarm Service
What is Telecare?
A community alarm (also known as telecare) is a simple, easy-to-use device that allows you to call for help if you need emergency assistance.
When you activate the alarm, a trained response team will speak to you through the unit. They can then contact your chosen emergency contacts or, if needed, the emergency services.
Who is it for?
A community alarm may be suitable if you:
- Live alone or are often left on your own
- Would find it difficult to deal with an emergency due to disability, illness or frailty
- Have limited mobility or are at risk of falls
- Have other assessed care or support needs
How much does it cost?
- £5 per week for the alarm monitoring service
- No charge for the alarm unit or additional equipment (such as heat or fall detectors)
What do I need?
To use the service, you will need:
- A good mobile signal or internet connection
- An electricity socket near where the unit will be placed
- At least two emergency contacts who:
- Live nearby
- Have access to your home
- Are able to assist you if needed
You are responsible for any telephone or internet connection costs.
How is it installed?
An Occupational Therapy Aide (OTA) will visit you to assess your needs. If the service is suitable, they will arrange an installation date.
Installation usually takes less than one hour. We will show you, and anyone who supports you, how to use the equipment.
What happens next?
To keep your service working properly:
- Wear your pendant or call button at all times
- Test the system every four weeks (you or a carer can do this)
All maintenance and servicing will be carried out by our Occupational Therapy team.
