Historic Marine Protected Areas
Historic Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) seek to preserve marine historic sites of national importance. Historic MPAs were introduced in the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010 and may be designated in Scottish territorial waters (up to 12 nautical miles). Diving is encouraged but nothing can be removed from the seabed.
Shetland’s MPAs are:
- Kennemerland, Skerries
- Wrangles Palais, Skerries
- Queen of Sweden, Bressay Sound
