What Should I do if I am a …

Archaeological Consultant

You are welcome to ask us for advice at point. The better communication we have, the smoother the process tends to be.

We provide you with baseline data for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), Desk Based Assessments (DBAs), and bespoke archaeological advice, based on the Historic Environment Record.

We can provide GIS shapefiles of visible site extent polygons (frequently derived from aerial photographs) and can search using your GIS shapefiles. At present our polygons do not include a buffer, although they include “discovery boxes” in instances where the grid reference we hold is not precise.  We can provide detailed information as pdfs.

We also hold a digital archive within the HER, including photos and reports.

We will monitor and advise during the life of your client’s development including from the pre-application stage, through the   fieldwork and during the life of any post-excavation work.

Key points to remember:

  • Please ensure that you always reference HER numbers in addition to your own numbering system
  • Our site name may differ from that of other sources
  • Our site description and location are the most up to date which we have, but are derived from a variety of sources and are not all ground-truthed.
  • Our polygons for a Scheduled Monument may cover a greater area than that in the scheduling document and may  include archaeology which is not scheduled.
  • If you require an HER extract or site information, please include a grid reference and a location map. Even if you include a shapefile, we need to know where it will appear when loaded.
  • There may be a charge depending on the nature of the request.
