Landowner / Tenant
Landowners and their tenants are the custodians of Shetland.
It is important that our archaeology is looked after as it is part of our collective history, our identity and what makes Shetland distinctive and unique. It helps to make Shetland an attractive place to live, work and play.
As a landowner or tenant, you can find whether you have archaeological sites on your land.
If you would like more information as to how to look after archaeology on your land, we are happy to help.
Metal detectorists need the Landowner’s permission. They should not detect on known archaeological sites. To discover if this applies check the Historic Environment Record (HER) or contact us. It is illegal to detect on Scheduled Monuments.
If an archaeological site or object has been found on your land or which you think we might not have recorded, then please contact us as we would like to add it to the HER.
For more information about the sites on your land, advice on how to manage them, or to report a new site or artefact then please contact us.
