Burial Services

Before a memorial can be erected, written permission must be obtained from Burial Services on a memorial permit application form, this must also be completed for repairs to a memorial or when a new inscription is added. A Council approved memorial stonemason will help you with this.

To ensure that all memorials are being fixed to a recognised industry standard, only stonemasons who have been council approved can complete works on memorials in our burial grounds.

The lair holder, their beneficiaries or their representatives are responsible for any memorial placed at a lair (grave) and its upkeep.

Step-by-Step Process

1. Choose a Council-Approved Stonemason

• Please contact a stonemason from the list of council-approved memorial stonemasons below.
• Some firms only carry out installation, while others such as Shetland Memorials and Leask Memorials can also supply the memorial itself.

2. Select Your Memorial

• Work with your chosen stonemason (and/or supplier) to decide on the design and specifications of your memorial.

3. Complete the Memorial Permit Application Form

• Print the form from the link provided below.
• Fill in the top section of the form, which includes the lair holder and lair details.
• The form must be completed in wet ink (scanned or digital signatures are not accepted).

4. Submit the Form via Your Stonemason

• Once completed, pass or post the form to your stonemason.
• The stonemason will complete and sign their section, then submit it to Burial Services on your behalf.

5. Council Liaison

• Once approval is sent to your stonemason, work on the memorial can proceed.
