What is the Shetland Car Club?  

The Shetland Car Club is a car-sharing programme that allows members to access a fleet of vehicles without the need for personal car ownership. It offers flexibility, convenience, and cost savings compared to traditional vehicle ownership.  

Why did Shetland Islands Council create the car club?  

Shetland Islands Council established the car club to improve fleet management efficiency, reduce grey fleet usage, and support strategic goals such as decarbonisation and active travel. It also aims to address mobility inequalities by providing access to vehicles for those who cannot afford car ownership.  

How does the car club work?   

  • Membership:   

Membership fees start from as little as £10.00 per year. There is no commitment period.  

  • Booking:   

Vehicles can be booked online or via the mobile app for as little as half an hour.

  • Costs:   

Prices start at £7.50 per hour  and £0.25 pe mile. A fuel card, linked to each vehicle’s telematics, is provided so the mileage charge covers any fuel costs.

  • Insurance:   

Insurance is covered by Enterprise Car Club.  

  • Fuelling:   

Vehicles come with a fuel card for easy refuelling. 

What membership options are available?  

The Shetland Car Club offers several membership options to suit different needs. What types of vehicles are available? 

The car club offers a variety of vehicles. Currently, it includes small cars, large MPVs, and a van,  ensuring you can choose the right vehicle for your needs.  

How does the car club benefit the environment?  

By promoting shared vehicle use, the car club helps reduce the number of vehicles on the road, contributing to lower carbon emissions. Members are also more likely to walk or cycle for shorter journeys. 

Will the car club compete with public transport? 

The car club is designed for short-term hires and is not intended to replace public transport. It complements existing transport options by providing flexibility for occasional car use. 

Can I use my own insurance? 

No, insurance is provided by Enterprise Car Club as part of the membership. 

How do I fuel up the car? 

Each vehicle comes with a fuel card that can be used at selected local fuel stations. A unique PIN is provided with each booking. 

What if I need to extend my booking? 

Contact the Enterprise Clubhouse to extend your booking. They will assist in finding a solution. 

Can I join if I have points on my license? 

Yes, as long as your driving license is valid in the UK, and you meet other requirements. 

What is the minimum age to join? 

You must be 19 or over to join. If under 22, you must have held a full driving license for at least one year. 

Can I take pets in the car? 

No, pets are not allowed to prevent allergies. Service animals are accommodated with prior arrangement.
