Anniversaries, Citizenship and Garden Party invites

Anniversary Messages

Birthday card sml

Each year, thousands of birthday and wedding anniversary cards are sent to people celebrating significant birthdays and wedding anniversaries.  The delivery of these messages is arranged by the Anniversaries Office at Buckingham Palace, continuing a tradition which goes back to 1917.

Cards are sent to those celebrating their 100th and 105th birthday and every year thereafter, and to those celebrating their diamond wedding (60th), 65th, 70th wedding anniversaries and every year thereafter.  More details including FAQs are available on the Royal UK website

Citizenship Ceremonies

Anyone over the age of 18 who has successfully applied to become a UK Citizen, is required to attend a Citizenship Ceremony.  In Shetland, these take place at Lerwick Town Hall and are organised by the Registrar.

Citizenship Ceremonies take place as required throughout the year, and would normally be attended by the Lord Lieutenant and the Convener of Shetland Islands Council, or their deputies.

More details on Citizenship Ceremonies can be found at Gov.UK Citizenship Ceremonies or by contacting Shetland Islands Council's Registrar

Royal Garden Parties

Royal garden party holyrood sml

Each year, the Shetland Lieutenancy is invited by the Palace to nominate a small number of guests, with partners, to attend the Royal Garden Party at The Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

The Garden Parties are held during Holyrood Week at the beginning of July each year and nominating someone is always a fine way to recognise a special contribution to the community.

The Lieutenancy maintains a list of possible guests throughout the year and in February each year we send out letters to those who have been nominated to ask if they would care to accept the invite.  Once we have the final list, we then submit the list to the Palace.

Over the years, there has been a wide spread of nominees from across Shetland, reflecting outstanding achievements across many aspects of Shetland life - including volunteering or charity work, sporting achievements, contributions to culture and arts, and business.
