Athlete Travel Award Scheme applications invited

Island travel scheme 2021

Applications will open for round two of the 2021/22 Shetland Athlete Travel Award Scheme later this week.

The scheme aims to support sportspeople from Shetland by helping with travel costs, and improving access to competitions and development opportunities only available on the mainland.

Due to the uncertainty cause by the pandemic, it was agreed for this year only there would be a second round of applications later in the year to allow applications from those who did not know their off island training and competition schedule earlier.

Candidates in Shetland can apply for sums up to £1,500. The amount received will be based on the applicant’s competition and training schedule as well as their awareness of where they are on their sports performance pathway.

The scheme will open to applications from Friday 5th November and close on Friday 19th November 2021.

Applicants will be asked to provide evidence as to how the grant will improve their performance, provide them access to quality training opportunities and improve their sports or club environment.

Jack Clubb, Sports Development Officer, Shetland Islands Council said: “We are delighted to open a second round of applications for the 2021/22 Athlete Travel Award Scheme.  We know that some athletes weren’t aware of their off-island training and competition schedule earlier this year.  After discussions with sportscotland and partners we’re now able to offer a second round of applications and we look forward to supporting more athletes to travel off island to compete and succeed at a national level.”
