Train Shetland apprentices’ 2020 success

Forty eight local apprentices have completed qualifications through Train Shetland in 2020, overcoming some of the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.

Apprentices have achieved success in local workplaces across diverse range of disciplines, including business administration, social care, childcare, construction, mechanics, horticulture and accounting.  They have gained vocational qualifications ranging from SVQ Level 2 through to Level 5, equivalent to post graduate study.

Train Shetland provides support to apprentices and local employers in the both public and private sectors.  An annual awards event is normally held to celebrate apprentices' successes, attended by employers' representatives, guests and staff, although that hasn't been possible this year.

Peter Campbell, Chair of Shetland College Board, with responsibility for Train Shetland, said: "My congratulations to all those apprentices on their outstanding achievements in 2020, despite the disruption to all our lives as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. I'd also like to offer my thanks to local employers who continue to either take on young apprentices, who will be our future workforce, or for the development or retraining of existing staff."
