Flooding consultation now live

Stormy seas

Anyone with an interest in the impact of flooding can respond to the national consultation on Flood Risk Management Plans, which is now open for responses.

The online consultation is being by led by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and seeks comments on how future flood risks can be managed.  The Flood Risk Management Plan for Shetland, which includes potentially vulnerable areas, has been produced by Shetland Islands Council and is now available on the SEPA website for comment.

The plans describe possible sources and impacts of floods, as well as more detailed information, such as the objectives and potential actions to manage flood risk.  SEPA works in partnership with local authorities and comments received through the consultation will help to refine and shape local delivery plans.

Details of the consultation are available on the SEPA website and users can search their area of interest using a map or postcode search.  Responses are made electronically through the Citizen Space portal, which is a widely used tool for public sector consultations.

SEPA can also be contacted by email - with the subject title “FRM consultation”

The deadline for responses on this consultation is 31st October 2021.

Due to current restrictions, Shetland Islands Council is unable to accommodate requests for this information at SEPA or Council offices.

Locally, information and contact details are available on the Council’s website

The Flood Risk Management (Scotland) Act 2009 (FRM Act) introduced a co-ordinated and partnership approach to tackle flood risk in Scotland sustainably. SEPA, Scottish Water and local authorities have been working together to improve knowledge and understanding of the impacts of flooding.
