Shetland Islands Council is calling for any retired or qualified teachers who are not working at the moment to join their relief bank of teachers to provide short-notice teaching cover.
The Council is looking to strengthen the supply list of teaching staff who might be available to provide temporary cover when needed, such as staff absences or to potentially fill vacant posts for a short time whilst recruitment and selection processes are worked through.
All individuals must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and will need to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or have a PVG update, before joining the relief bank. The hours of work will be as and when required, at different teaching locations across Shetland, for either primary or secondary-aged pupils.
Robin Calder, Executive Manager, Quality Improvement, in Children’s Services said: “We’re really keen to hear from any retired or teaching staff who aren’t working, to explore if they’d be willing to undertake supply work in our schools. This would assist us to ensure that we can provide teaching cover when the need arises, such as for staff absences or any time when there are gaps in current teaching provision.”
Mr Calder adds, “The nature of this work can vary, and we’re willing to be flexible. We are appealing to anyone suitably qualified, whether they have many years of teaching experience or may be a recently qualified teacher, or a flexible route probationer. We can also advise on the process of re-registering with the GTCS.
“Teaching is such a rewarding and privileged role, within our community, providing the opportunity to form strong and binding relationships with children and young people and joining teams of committed school staff.”
