Shetland Islands Council has been shortlisted for a prestigious local government award after Council catering staff volunteered to prepare meals on Christmas Day last year.

Alison Williamson and Brenda Moar, who are Head Cook and Assistant Cook at Sound Primary School, last year cooked and delivered Christmas meals to local families who were struggling financially.  Funding for the food was paid for by the Scottish Government’s COVID Economic Recovery Fund.

The Council has been shortlisted at The MJ Achievement Awards, which recognises the work of local government across the UK.  An awards ceremony taking place in London on the afternoon of Friday 23rd June that will be attended by Council representatives from all over the country.

In the same ‘Community Engagement’ category are Buckinghamshire Council, East Ayrshire Council, Mansfield District Council, and three London Boroughs - Hammersmith and Fulham, Newham, and Redbridge.

Helen Budge, Director of Children’s Services, said: “Our catering staff in schools across Shetland do a fantastic job every day and Alison and Brenda are wonderful ambassadors for the service and for their colleagues.  I’m delighted that their initiative to support families in need last Christmas has been recognised with this shortlisting and we have our fingers crossed for the awards on Friday.”
