Shetland Islands Council has today issued a statement and shared a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) after a meeting with representatives of the Parent Council at Aith Junior High School.

Samantha Flaws, Director of Children’s Services, said:

“Council officers and members of the school’s management team had a constructive and productive meeting on Tuesday evening with representatives of the Aith Junior High School Parent Council.  We discussed in full the concerns that have been raised about future proposals for Enhanced Provision at Aith Junior High School.

"I would like to apologise unreservedly, on behalf of Shetland Islands Council, for the lack of clear information provided in relation to Enhanced Provision at the school and for any upset and distress this may have caused to parents and carers.  I hope that the discussions and the FAQs mark the beginning of a process that allows us to move forward together.

“Parents who have formally raised complaints with Elected Members will receive a copy of the FAQs along with a covering letter addressing their specific concerns.  Council officers will continue to work with Parent Council representatives to further develop the proposals, and the school management team will engage with staff to ensure they have regular opportunities to contribute.

“Once a potential way forward is agreed, we will plan a wider consultation—placing children, young people, and their families across the Westside at the heart of that process. I want to reassure everyone that we are listening.”
