Anderson High School is the first school in Shetland to be awarded a silver Reading School accreditation by national reading charity Scottish Book Trust.
The Reading Schools programme, aims to support schools to build a reading culture, and to encourage pupils to feed their imagination through books.
Reading activities have been led by pupils in the ‘The Book Dragons’ group, who made displays and encouraged people to read more with stickers and badges. Staff in the school library also provided support, working with pupils and staff to promote access to books and to regularly embed reading for pleasure in the school’s activities.
Robin Calder, Head Teacher of AHS: “The Reading Schools programme has been an excellent whole school initiative that has inspired an uptake in reading across year groups. Reading books is an important activity that helps to support wellbeing, boosts creativity and critical thinking, and improves attainment across the curriculum. There’s been a number of staff and departments involved across the school and we really appreciate the work of everyone involved. ”
Scottish Book Trust is a national charity that believes everyone living in Scotland should have equal access to books. Reading Schools is an accreditation programme to help schools build and sustain a reading culture.
